Carpet Cleaning Specialists Pet Odor Removal

Pet urine can cause permanent damage to your carpet and upholstery. It also creates an unhealthy living environment. When urine is first deposited, It is easier to remove. Once it dries, removing it becomes more difficult. The warm acidic state of the urine is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, which begin to live and breed almost immediately. In this original acidic state, it starts to oxidize and react with the carpet to create color change, which can be permanent if not removed immediately. Some of this color change can be attributed to the strong ammonia.  If it is left for days or weeks, depending on the fabric or floor type, it can change the dye structure, causing a permanent stain. Even if the liquid is removed, damage to the dye structure may already be done.

Urine can present additional odor problems in High Humidity.
Dried urine is often easy to smell in the humid months because the salts attract moisture, the moisture evaporates and releases a greater amount of odorous ammonia gas. Completely getting rid of the urine salts in the carpet and many times the pad and subfloor, is the only way to completely remove the odor.

Removing the Urine
If there are only a few pet stains causing the odor (and we can identify where they are) we use a sub surface extractor to flush out the urine and salts from the carpet and pad. This tool creates such high suction that it allows us to flush out  and extract the urine from the carpet and pad with cleaning solution from above, without having to pull back the carpet. Enzymes are the best cleaning agent for urine, vomit and feces. An enzyme is the only cleaning agent that actually feeds on and digests bad bacteria. We treat the affected area with an enzyme after flushing the carpet.

Worst case Scenario.
In severe cases, to remove all, of the odor, the urine must be completely removed. This can be extensive and time consuming. In the worst cases, all of the following steps will be completed. When damage is not so bad a few steps may be left out.

  • Pull up carpet.
  • Remove affected pad.
  • Clean back of carpet.
  • Treat floor with an enzyme treatment.
  • Seal floor if needed with an odor barrier.
  • Treat back of carpet with enzyme treatment.
  • Install new tack strip.
  • Install new pad.
  • Re-install carpet.
  • Clean carpet.
  • Topically apply enzyme.

In the absolute worst of cases replacement is the only option. But only after cleaning and sealing the subfloor.
